  • RFID helps Wal-Mart reduce theft

    Mar 06, 2024
"As of September 2, 2022, all Wal-Mart suppliers who provide toys, household goods, electronic products and sporting goods must equip each item with an ultra-high frequency RFID tag. Wal Mart shared on its website:" This is an extension of the RFID authorization they launched earlier in 2020, which requires products from a few other departments, such as clothing, jewelry and tires, to be tagged with RFID chips. "   Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) allows Wal-Mart to track its inventory, which helps it manage shrinkage. This includes not only theft or passing the buck, but also items that have never been listed due to damage or employees taking them away.       Wal-Mart uses RFID UHF passive tags at the commodity level. The company leader shared: " This means that every commodity in the product category that is required to be labeled with RFID UHF EPC GEN2 tags will be labeled with RFID UHF tags on the commodity or its packaging. "   For example, since 2020, all clothes in Wal-Mart stores have been equipped with RFID UHF passive tags. The company added: "Anyone who buys a dress from Wal-Mart, such as a blouse or a bag of socks, may notice the RFID UHF tag embedded in the price tag or pasted near the barcode."   RFID can help Wal-Mart reduce theft   Most retailers use RFID, but Wal-Mart realizes complete transparency of inventory by labeling each item. This has some advantages in terms of supply chain and inventory tracking levels.   Wal-Mart shared some methods for tracking inventory using RFID UHF passive labels/tags   RFID UHF passive tags can store product information, such as product descriptions and prices, and provide real-time location in the supply chain.   In the absence of direct line of sight, RFID UHF tags can be scanned at a distance of 40 feet from the RFID UHF fixed or handheld reader, allowing for quick identification of items.   Several RFID UHF paper/PVC/PET/on-metal tags can be scanned simultaneously, greatly reducing reception, sorting, and fulfillment time.   RFID solutions allow managers to track inventory changes in real-time and issue alerts when inventory items are low or need replenishment in short time.   RFID can also prevent theft at various levels, including employees and customers. This may include tracking stolen items from one store location and returning them at another location.   Bill Hardgrave founded an RFID laboratory at the University of Memphis and talked about using RFID to prevent theft at the National Retail Federation's "exhibition".   Hadgrave said, "Especially for chain stores - they steal things from one store and then return them to another store." "With RFID, when you gain full visibility through a point of sale, you can capture it." Retail driven reporting.   Employee theft accounts for about one-third of all reductions. RFID enables retailers to know their actual inventory in order to determine losses when they occur. Fraudulent returns accounted for 13.7% of last year's $743 billion returns. If RFID allows retailers to close channels for monetization of theft, it would save potential costs of $101 billion.

  • RFID is being used for the first time in frozen embryo management in UK

    Jan 31, 2024
The Hewitt Fertility Center recently completed a three-year study on the potential risks of artificially cryopreserved eggs and embryos after fertility treatment. Research has found that artificial cryostorage for in vitro fertilization (IVF) is still prone to potential failure points. So, the Hewitt Fertility Center in the UK found the American company TMRW. TMRW is a life science company that utilizes RFID technology to automate in vitro fertilization laboratories. For TMRW, this is their first UK client. This RFID solution is called CRS, an automated system for managing and storing frozen eggs and embryos. The CRS platform consists of hardware and software, which can securely track, monitor, and store frozen eggs and embryos. With this solution, frozen specimens can be automatically recognized and tracked through RFID UHF passive tags on the specimens, readers for capturing tag IDs, and automated robots. Specifically, this RFID solution can assist in the management of frozen embryos in the following areas:   Tracking and monitoring   RFID technology can provide real-time, highly automated tracking and monitoring capabilities, allowing medical institutions to understand real-time information about the storage status, location, and temperature of embryos. This is crucial for ensuring the safety and quality of embryos.   Improving efficiency   Through RFID UHF technology, medical institutions can quickly and accurately track and record the storage and management process of embryos, reducing manual operations and interventions, and improving management efficiency.   Risk reduction   RFID UHF technology can reduce manual operations and interventions, reducing risks caused by human errors or negligence, such as misstorage, retrieval, or temperature anomalies.   Enhanced security   Through UHF RFID technology, medical institutions can monitor and track frozen embryos in real-time, reducing the risk of embryos being mistakenly taken or stolen, and enhancing the security of frozen embryos.   Improving data analysis capabilities   By collecting and analyzing RFID Tags data, medical institutions can better understand the storage and management of embryos, optimize management processes, and improve management quality.       This solution enables clinics to remotely monitor specimens at any time. The TMRW report states that compared to artificial specimen management and storage systems, CRS helps reduce potential failure points by 94% and helps reproductive clinics safely expand to meet the growing demand for patients. Previously, we mentioned in "RFID is said to be useful, what if it is in a liquid environment of -20 degrees Celsius?" that RFID UHF passive tags can still be read normally in low-temperature liquid environments, which is actually a very excellent performance that many recognition technologies cannot achieve.
